      “So …”

He trails off, tapping a staccato rhythm against the can in his hands. THIS marks the first day he’s been HOME since Christmas and the DINNER that had been more NEGOTIATION than WILLING. Honestly, he still doesn’t know what Harvey - or Jim for that matter - thinks about his current state of affairs.

At least he’s not keeping it a secret any longer…

“Slade Wilson … pretty funny, right?”

The chuckle that follows is a touch nervous, tinged with UNEASE. He wanted it to go well, he really did - but he himself had been SO LATE and Slade himself is primarily UNWILLING to tell him what had happened, or what they’d spoken about.

Told him to ask Harvey.

Dick is more concerned about whether or not he APPROVES, really. Harvey’s opinion is important to him, and he wants his adoptive father to SUPPORT him in his relationship.

As INSANE as it might seem.

   “ Yeah? ”

The mug of steaming caffeinated liquid is brought to his lips. He never MINDS Dick’s visits– Harvey QUITE enjoys them. Talking with his adopted son was NEVER a problem… Not until NOW it seemed. He’s WELL aware of that tone– that ONE inflection. He’s NERVOUS. Unnecessarily so.

That’s… not the word I would USE. He’s certainly… SOMETHING.

TO be quite FRANK, Harvey’s HAD his opinion on Slade : the MASTER, deadly ASSASSIN. It never QUITE set well with him. He THOUGHT the same about Slade Wilson as he did every OTHER criminal.

Until their RELATIONSHIP came to light.

And that made ALL the difference. It’s not WHO he envisioned Dick with– not by a long shot. It’s not WHO he wants Dick to be with. He KNOWS the path of villainy VERY well. And he knows the HURT that it brought Jim. Harvey wants his adopted son to be SPARED of the hurt Jim endured.

BUT– after talking to the assassin a couple of times ( some that his son MIGHT not even be aware of ), Harvey Gordon BEGAN to come around. IT might not be the PERFECT match ( in Harvey’s eyes, at least. NO ONE would be good enough for Dick ), but… at least for the foreseeable future, it’s who his son BELONGS with.

Well, we’ll go TOGETHER. ” TOGETHER. They do it ALL together, now. And Harvey wouldn’t HAVE it any other way. “ NEITHER of us have a parent to walk us down the aisle, and NEITHER of us are a bride so. It works OUT that way.

He's a fan of the metallic hats, a fan of the streamers, fan of the glitter and the shine and the brilliant lights of the moment. More than that, he's a fan of the vibe. New and hopeful and ready to something better. He's still new to the household, still shy and uncertain about his place in this world - but this, all of this, somehow makes him feel a little better. He reaches out to grab his carer's hand. " Happy New Year, Mr. Harvey. "

Harvey isn’t MUCH of one to celebrate the bringing in of the New Year, but he was a FAN of bringing friends and FAMILY together. Any excuse to do so– even the new year, was enough. And besides, had Dick ever EXPERIENCED a real New Years party, anyways?  Decorations were only a PART of the ambiance. If he was going to HOST a New Years get-together, by GOD, he was going to do it right.

Streamers and hats and glitter and all. One MIGHT confuse the downtown apartment for a Harlem plaza in the 1920′s. A few of the guests are TIPSY, but not the attorney. Generally, he’s only a SOCIAL drinker, due to his FATHER. And with the state of their NEW companion, sobriety is the ONLY option for him.

Dent’s gazing towards the PARTIES going on in the streets below when he FEELS his hand grabbed. It’s far TOO small to be Jim’s. A SOFT, kind grin spreads across his features as he KNEELS to the child’s height.

Happy New Year, Dick.

DICK.

Mr. Harvey WINKS at him, and for some STRANGE reason, that makes him feel better. A SMILE threatens at the edge of his lips, even as he ducks his head to hide it, shuffling his feet on the carpet. What must that feel like on bare feet? Is he ALLOWED to take his shoes off? He doesn’t like SHOES, never used to wear them much back in the circus. They ANNOY him, he can’t feel the ground beneath his feet.

Still, talk of the ROOM has him looking up once more, forgetting how much he dislikes shoes in favor of just what Mr. Harvey is saying. He’s never had THIS much space to himself before, or a BATHROOM, or a CLOSET or even a DOOR that he can call his own. It’s … it’s all a little much, really.

It does excite him, though. He isn’t sure why there’s a soft aftertaste of GUILT to the sentiment, but he tries to focus on the good. Looks up at his benefactor with WIDE eyes.

“Paint the walls? We could do that?”

image

They used to paint the outside of their caravans; already Dick is thinking of BLUE birds frozen in flight upon that plain white wall. He wonders if Mr. Harvey is any good at painting.

Or maybe Mr. Jim is the artist of the family.

“This is … this is cool. I … thank you. Thank
you, Mr. Harvey.” He swallows, looking around
again. “I don’t think they would have let us
paint walls if you’d given me to foster people.
                Would they?”

He’s TRYING his best to LIGHTEN the mood. It’s awkward ENOUGH for Harvey alone. He can’t imagine what must be going through Dick’s head. Is he talking about it all too fast? Does Dick even want to be here? Is he OKAY with having TWO adopted dads, rather than the normal? Still, he wants the boy to FEEL at home. Shoes or not. Harvey often went around in socks. Dick could do WHATEVER he wanted.

Harvey bought the apartment AFTER his father ( finally ) bit the dust. He invested the profit off his childhood home– as well as his grandfather’s into this sizable apartment in downtown Gotham. He wanted a place he could live in… forever. And in THINKING of the future, he made sure to have an extra room… just in CASE

image

Yeah, definitely. Do you have any ideas? ”

He can almost see the gears working in the kid’s head. It’s NICE to see him focusing on something ELSE– rather than the blatant obvious situation. Harvey’s ARTISTIC skills leave much to be desired, but stencils could be bought. EASY fix.

You don’t have to THANK me,he smirks, following the boy’s eyes. He doesn’t HAVE to, but it’s nice to know Dick doesn’t HATE it here… yet. And then a soft LAUGH ensues.  No, they wouldn’t have.

DICK.

Sitting in that office, in the too hard chair with ringing phones and people that looked at him out of the corner of their eyes - this had seemed like a good idea. He didn’t WANT to go to an orphanage, didn’t want to go to a foster home with MORE people that looked at him out of the corner of their eyes.

Mr. Dent - Harvey - Mr. Harvey Dent had offered to take him home. To his home. Instead of those other places. Looked at him right in the eye when he said it. Like he wasn’t just some lost little boy, but someone who could UNDERSTAND what was happening to him.

With the exception of Detective Gordon, Mr. Harvey had been the nicest person he’d spoken with since it had happened, so it made sense that when the nice man said he would take care of him, that he agreed.

But now, stepping over the threshold into a HOME without wheels - he can’t help but second guess his decision. He trails behind Mr. Harvey, feeling an odd mixture of awe and fear at the wide open spaces with windows and furniture that had only one intended purpose.

He couldn’t walk five paces in his family’s old road train, cluttered with generations of memorabilia that meant something to everyone. Here, he can walk without having to be worried about bumping into anything.

It feels strange.

Stranger still when he’s shown his bedroom. An entire room. Just for him. All of it. He lingers in the doorway, fiddling with the hem of his shirt.

“S’nice. Pretty. You have a nice home.”

Polite. Be polite. Always be polite. His Da had taught him that.

image

He considers the bed that Mr. Harvey places his things on, his brow furrowing ever so slightly.

           “Is that for me?”

He’s never had a proper bed before; there had only been one in their train-care and that had been shared by his parents. Dick had slept in a hammock, his own little place where he’d rock himself to sleep of a night. Now that, like everything else, has changed - leaving Dick with nothing left to do but adjust.

He’d thought about TAKING in the boy for a long time EVEN longer before he mentioned the possibility to Jim. WHILE the detective knew the kid, what would he THINK about the idea of parenthood? Harvey was SKEPTICAL it was anything positive. HOWEVER, the idea of KEEPING it quiet gnawed away at him ; so much so that the confession PRACTICALLY exploded during dinner.

Dent KNEW that kids who ended up in the system were BETTER off on the streets. The HOUSES were abusive, the kids were mean, the parents were neglectful. Not that ANY of that sat right with Harvey, but at LEAST these kids were getting FED, an education AND a place to sleep. But somewhere WITHIN him, he wanted Dick to have better. He wanted the kid to HAVE a childhood with… possibly PLEASANT memories.

Switching from the circus life to a RELATIVELY normal one had to be SCARY. With all of the changes Dick’s had to see within the last few weeks, he could ONLY imagine that he was overwhelmed with it allHarvey would be.

Thanks, he winks, a soft chuckle ESCAPING through his lips. It’s yours now, too.

He pauses, a SLIGHT state of confusion and… AWE settling on his features. Of course. Dick probably NEVER had a real bed, much less and entire room all to himself.

image

Yes, Dick. Yeah, this entire room is YOUR space. There’s also a bathroom, and a closet just through that door, he POINTS to the room at the back of the bedroom.  That’s yours, too… IF you WANT, we can paint the walls, get a new bed, different dressers and stuff… If you want.

( Welcome to the family || @halysborn )

The door to the apartment SWINGS open. And suddenly Dent notices every flaw. There’s still dishes in the sink, a mug on the coffee table. How long has it been since he swept in here?

Your room’s going to be down the hallway to the right. he follows the boy through the living room, shouldering a backpackthey could take a tour later. First things first, Dick needed to see his room. It wasn’t much ; pretty PLAIN, as far as boys rooms went, but

Perhaps he’s a little more nervous than he’s letting on.

Harvey never had a father. Well, not one that wasn’t abusive. His only guidance was someone who BEAT him if he came home two minutes late. Harvey’s father figure was the one RESPONSIBLE for the scars on his torso AND mind.

He HAD to admit, taking in Dick like this REHASHED a lot of memories Dent THOUGHT he repressed years ago. But did they REALLY matter? As the boy steps into his room, Dent swears that Dick is never going to have the childhood he did ; he’s going to have EVERYTHING Harvey only WISHED he had.

He sets down the few bags on the bed. What do you think so far? ”

“You know this is all CRAP, right?”

He’s slouched in an old familiar seat, knees pressed firm to the front of the desk before him. Arms folded tight over his chest, his expression is one of incredulous amusement. He can’t quite believe what is happening, or WHY

His school uniform is marked by a hard day at Gotham Academy, his shirt rumpled and his tie hanging loose about his neck. They’d NABBED him right outside of school, been where ALFRED should have been.

CHILD PROTECTION SERVICES.

“I mean, you KNOW Bruce. He’s not like that.
I’m fine, nothing’s happening to me! Why are
they trying to take me away from him?”

YES, I know. And I ONLY heard about it a few minutes before YOU did.

He’s MADLY dialing numbers on the telephone ONLY to find a BUSY line. Hang up. Dial. Busy. Repeat. He’s not EXACTLY shocked that CPS decided to take a look at Bruce Wayne –- given his lifestyle. But all that could be EASED. Harvey had some pull AND a personal relationship with Dick, Alfred and Bruce.

image

Dent didn’t DOUBT that Dick was taken care of. The officials would SEE that after they chatted with Bruce and the ADOPTED son. What REALLY concerned him is how they WENT behind Harvey’s back to pick up the kid.

I know, I KNOW. I’m working on it, and I REALLY wish I knew, Dick. But for RIGHT NOW, you have to comply. Just ANSWER their questions and after a few days of INVESTIGATIONS, you’ll be able to RETURN to the manor.

GRAYSON.

He can’t tell if he’s happy or sad to see Mr. Dent again. It has nothing to do with the man himself, he’s been nothing but nice to him through this entire thing, but there’s no fooling with the fact that he met him BECAUSE of what happened to his parents.

He’s glad to see a familiar face, but he’s also reminded that he now lives with a word branded across his soul.

O R P H A N.

         “Yeah. I mean … “

He glances over his shoulder at the ball being kicked between the others, feeling the weight of recalcitrance settle heavy in his chest.

image

“I wasn’t really doing anything, anyway.”

So, instead, he turns his focus full to the lawyer that listens, tilting his head to the right.

“What did you want to talk about?”

Dent understand how CONFLICTING seeing him again must be. Being as, the last time they met, Harvey was putting him into a foster home. All far away from the previous life he’d started to grow up. Hell, he wouldn’t even blame the kid if he didn’t WANT to see him again. Harvey would understand. & he was JUST a kid. Dick lost his parents too soon. Harvey wouldn’t get OFFENDED if he reminded him of ALL those unpleasant memories.

A hand card through his dark hair, following the kid’s glance over to the other children. At least maybe he was making some–

image

Apparently not. No child wanted to have their game interrupted by a BORING lawyer when all their FRIENDS were around. Maybe if he just gave Dick a little more time…

Yeah, I just wanted to check in with you,  Harvey gives the foster parents a THIN smile, signaling that it was OKAY for the two of them to be alone. ❛ To see how you’re doing here? If you like it? If you’re being treated well… all that stuff. & now, I know it’s not like you’re old home. But we talked about that, remember? ❜
